1970s Rolex Daytona Reference 6263

Why This Watch Matters

The reference 6263 Daytona is considered by many to be the most desirable wristwatch in the world – and this an example of an honest, original watch that features the sought-after “Sigma” dial.

The Full Story

There are Daytonas and then there are Daytonas. While the almighty Cosmograph has become somewhat ubiquitous in the world of watch-collecting, this example has a lot to offer. Why? First, this watch, which dates to 1974, is in wonderful, honest, unmolested condition. It features the original crystal, crown, and bezel, while the dial is remarkably clean – with all lume plots present except for that at 3 o'clock. Finally, this 6263 is made more special by the lack of the word “Daytona” above the register at 6 o’clock, as is common with the highly desirable “sigma” dials – a named derived from the small sigma symbols that surround the “Swiss” signature.  This Daytona is the ultimate watch, and one that is versatile enough to wear daily but special enough to garner a lot of attention from even the most hard-core of a collector. Best of all this, is the definition of an honest Daytona.

What we Love and What You Should Know

When looking at a Daytona, you should first examine what makes these watches so special – the case and dial. This particular example has beautiful, thick lugs (unpolished? We’ll never say that – here’s why) with what appears to be an original finish to the mid and top-case.  The dial is extremely sharp with zero spotting anywhere, and what’s more, the dial is unrestored, and though the lume plot at 3 o'clock is missing, presents exceptionally well and honest. The original period 19mm Oyster bracelet still sits on the 37mm case. This Daytona is an extremely original and honest example of a blue-chip chronograph in the truest sense of the term.
